How California Calculates Child Support

California uses a statewide formula to determine child support, set out in Family Code Section 4055: CS = K[HN - (H%)(TN)]. In plain terms, the two primary drivers are each parent’s net monthly disposable income and the percentage of time each parent spends with the child. The court considers a broad range of income sources when building that calculation.

Wages, self-employment income, tips, bonuses, commissions, disability benefits, Social Security, unemployment, and spousal support all count as income. From those gross figures, the court deducts taxes, health insurance premiums, mandatory retirement contributions, and existing support obligations to arrive at each parent’s net disposable income. One common misconception: equal timeshare doesn’t automatically zero out a support obligation. The court calculates support to maintain the child’s standard of living across both households, and the income gap between parents still matters. What Child Support Covers & How Long It Lasts

Child support in California is intended to cover shelter, food, clothing, education, transportation, healthcare, and childcare. Payments generally continue until the child turns 18, or until age 19 if the child is still a full-time high school student living at home.

The obligation can end earlier through emancipation, military enlistment, termination of parental rights, or the death of a parent or child. For a child with qualifying special needs, support may extend beyond those standard age limits depending on the circumstances.
